Health, nature, cultural and artistic sights and culinary specialities
These are the attractions of The Springs of Abano and Montegrotto, the largest thermal station in Europe, specialized in mud therapies. An oasis of peace and relaxation, surrounded by the restorative greenery of the Euganei hills, ideal for leaving behind the stress of the daily grind: all the hotels are modern, fully equipped with every comfort; the atmospheres are elegant and the service impeccable, each has a thermal pool and treatment centre. The Springs of Abano are recognized as the most important in Europe. Not only for the fame and prestige of its hotel complexes, but also for the location itself and the quality of its waters and thermal muds. The richness of the dissolved substances makes the waters of Abano and Montegrotto a thermal resource which is unique, classified chemically as high temperature containing sodium chlorine-iodine-bromine.
The spring waters run for a long distance underground, beginning from the pure reservoirs in the Pre-alpine chains. At a depth of 2000-3000 metres the waters are enriched with mineral salts and reach the Euganeo thermal basin and the hotel-thermal centres, where they flow at a temperature of 87°C. The Euganeo thermal mud is a skilful mix of natural clay, mineral water and micro-organisms which “incubate” in special tanks for about 50-60 days, during which the mud is kept in constant contact with the thermal water, which is kept flowing steadily at a temperature of 60° C: this process allows the mud to acquire the therapeutic properties that make it unique. Today the Euganeo Thermal Springs use these properties for both therapeutic and preventive treatments, and increasingly, for aesthetic and wellness treatments.
Application of muds and immersion in the thermal water stimulate the natural metabolism of the skin, improving its tone, detoxifying, draining and purifying.
A stay at the Euganeo Springs is ideal for lovers of sport and fitness: all hotels provide modern, fully equipped gyms, tennis courts and golf courses with pleasant greenery, elegant thermal pools (totalling 1000 square metres), hydromassage pools, jogging parks, minigolf and bicycle rental facilities.
Excursions on horseback or on foot are also possible, following the old roads through the plains, or the more than twenty trails through the park. The Euganeo Springs are situated in an area particularly rich in natural beauty, art and culture.
They are in the heart of the Veneto Region’s “Colli Euganei” Natural Park, which covers a hilly area of volcanic origin of about 19 thousand hectares, accessible by car, on foot or by bicycle, choosing from the various panoramic roads and the 20 equipped trails which crisscross its slopes. Villas, abbeys and medieval towns are found here and there, hidden in the green parkland. Ancient oaks and chestnut trees are interspersed with wide terraces cultivated with vines or orchards. The atmosphere of this landscape has special appeal thanks to its perfect blend of the natural and manmade.
For those who like gastronomic holidays a stay here can be spent tasting the best of Veneto cuisine, accompanied by the local wines (DOC dei Colli). The fertility of the soil produces excellent natural produce. Typical local produce such as the olive oil (mentioned as far back as 1300), honey and the “sweet raw ham of Montagnana” are hard to resist; then there are local dishes like risotto, the “risi e bisi” (rice and pea) soup, meat dishes such as “duck with fruit”, pigeon, “Padova hen”, guinea fowl, all accompanied, naturally, by polenta. Wine production is an ancient art here, thanks to the soil conditions and favourable climate. Today, production of quality wines from the Colli Euganei has been protected by the Consortium for wine control (D.O.C.) “Colli Euganei”, guaranteeing the place of origin, the tradition and quality of the cellars in the area which can be visited following the special “Strada del vino” (wine road) route.
